The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is one of the smallest in the country. We employ 263 staff, the largest component of which are Retained Firefighters.

There are ten fire stations on the Island, nine of which are solely staffed by Retained Firefighters. Our station at Newport is staffed by both Wholetime and Retained Firefighters.

If you are interested in serving the community where you live, being part of a dedicated team and are fit and able to respond to any challenge put upon you at anytime, day or night – then why not think about joining as a Retained Firefighter.

Prospective candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  • You must be of good character
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be physically fit, with good, unaided vision and not colour blind (some correction acceptable)

Ideally you must:

  • Live and/or work close to your local fire station

We offer a retaining fee and you will be paid for each call you attend as well as for any training sessions that are required.
Vacancies are advertised outside Local Fire Stations, in the local paper and sometimes on local radio.
Please click on the ‘Current Vacancies’ button to see if we are currently recruiting.
