Recruitment

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is one of the smallest in the country. We employ 263 staff, the largest component of which are Retained Firefighters.

There are a total of ten fire stations on the island, nine of which are exclusively staffed by Retained Firefighters. However, our station located in Newport is staffed by both Wholetime and Retained Firefighters.

If you are interested in serving your local community, being a part of a committed team, and possess the physical fitness and ability to tackle any challenge that arises day or night, then joining as a Retained Firefighter could be an excellent opportunity for you.

Prospective candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  • You must be of good character
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be physically fit, with good, unaided vision, and not color blind (some correction acceptable)

Ideally, you must:

  • Live and/or work close to your local fire station

We provide a retaining fee and compensate you for each call you attend and any necessary training sessions. We advertise vacancies for Retained Firefighters outside Local Fire Stations, in the local paper, and sometimes on local radio.
